Late 18th century Tavern clock by Andrews of Dover

A fine lacquer cased Tavern or ‘Act of parliament’ clock by Thomas Andrews 1773-1802, so known because these clocks were timekeepers in public places not subject to an act passed in 1797 imposing a tax on all domestic clocks and watches. The tax nearly ruined the clock and watchmaking trade and was so devastating that it was repealed a year later
